It's also the Kentucky Derby. Not that the race has any bearing on our move really, but I just thought I'd throw that in there. I feel sorry for all the sorry asses who paid $40 to get into the infield only to stand in the pouring rain/thunderstorms all afternoon. The whole place will turn into a mud pit and everything will be disgusting. I've been to the infield on beautiful days when it's sunny and warm and you can just lay on a blanket in the grass. And, I've been when it's rainy and muddy and EVERYTHING is disgusting. Personally, that's no fun to me. However, you pretty much have to be drunk in the infield, so I know everyone is going to be having a good time regardless. So, whatev.
I personally don't care that much about the Derby, I mean, it's just a race. But I do have a soft spot in my heart for Churchill Downs. I grew up literally 5 minutes down the street and my step-dad often took us to bet on the horses. He taught me how to read a program and how to pick a winner. I'm not the best, and since I don't go that often, I don't remember everything. But I always feel like I am better prepared than your average track-goer. Also I just think it's fun (The Derby or just going to the track.) The two weeks leading up to the Derby are a fucking hassle with the fireworks and parade shutting down the highways. But it's also kind of cool knowing you can run into any number of celebrities during Derby week/weekend.
This year my brother met Fred Willard, which is kind of fun. He also met and had a long conversation with Paula Abdul several years ago (like, pre-American Idol.) The last time I went to the Derby I met Mo Rocca (from the Daily Show, among other things) and saw Stephen Spielberg on another trip. Random. But it kind of makes you feel special for about 5 minutes.
Anyway, we should have had things moved for the most part yesterday had it not been for the Oaks (which is the day before the Derby....hmm, I guess it had a bearing on our move after all.) I thought I was going to have to work yesterday AND today, but was given off. So, we made a plan to sign our lease at noon and then go to pick up our Uhaul at 2. It was perfect weather yesterday and getting things packed up at 2 would have given us plenty of time to move almost everything. BUT, the Uhaul lady calls and tells Mike that she is going to the Oaks so we're either going to have to pick up the Uhaul at 11am or wait until 5pm. Getting it at 11 would have been too close to our lease signing time, so we had no other choice than to wait until 5. It was the most convenient location, plus we had already been given a deal on a truck. We wanted a 14 footer, but they didn't have one. So they gave us the 17 foot one for the lower price. Then the lady has the audacity to act like we're stupid for moving today because of the rain. Well, bitch, it's your fault.
Blah!
So, in addition to myself, Mike and Aaron, three of our friends showed up to also help us move. One who had a child-free night who lives like an hour or so away. And another who was sick, but chose to help anyway. We offered to buy everyone beer and give them food, and the people who had said they'd help us move a few weeks ago were suddenly too busy to help. And of course there were others who had to work or who had their kids or whatever. All valid reasons. And hell, if you just didn't want to help because you had better things to do or didn't want to sweat, that's fine. Just don't make a stupid excuse for it.
Anyway, we got the Uhaul packed pretty much to the brim with all the furniture and bulky stuff we could fit. It's 89 cents per mile and we live about 13 miles from the apartment, so we don't want to make more than one trip. We also filled Aaron's van with as much stuff as we could, mostly my breakable kitchen stuff. Didn't want to risk putting that in the truck and having something else heavy fall on it.
By the time we got everything packed away it was already dark and too late to go move anything. We certainly didn't want to start off our first day at the new apartment pissing off the neighbors. So obviously we had to wait until today. As it stands it's cloudy and kind of sprinkling, but not too bad. If we go fast we can probably get it unloaded pretty quickly. Although it does suck that we will have to move everything upstairs (groan.) The forecast says it's going to rain all day, with more severe weather starting around 3. Did I mention we're supposed to get like 4 inches of rain by the end of the weekend? Lovely.
Despite having stayed up wayyy too late, I got up at like 8:45. So I ate and packed away last minute stuff in the bathroom, then pulled all of my remaining clothes from the closet. Since it's raining I bundled them all up with cord and put trash bags over them (like a dry cleaning bag) and then tied the bags at the end. That way they won't get wet, and won't fall everywhere if something happens to fall off the hanger. I already put all of that stuff into my car, in addition to the last couple of things from the garage and a hamper of clean clothes I hadn't had a chance to put away yet. Before we leave I'll put our computer and monitor in the front seat and whatever else I can stuff in there.
Other than that we have just a handful of boxes, plus our dresser drawers and a couple of glass pieces that go to my coffee/end tables. They're kind of a pain in the ass and I wish I had thought about that when I bought them like 5 years ago. But what can you do? Luckily our friend Cassie has a small SUV that we should be able to put those bulky items into. Our other friends who are helping today all drive mid-sized sedans but I think between all of us we should be able to get everything and go in one trip.
The only thing I worry about now is getting a close parking spot for the Uhaul. Our apartment building is in the very back corner of the complex and is back off the parking lot. If we wanted to back the Uhaul up to the door we'd have to drive through the grass and I'm pretty sure management would frown upon that. So we'll just have to hope that some people will have moved their cars when we get there. Also, there is a security door to the building that you have to unlock and we'll definitely have to prop that open. I really hope the other tenants are ok with that. Seriously the last thing I want to do is make our neighbors hate us. (but one would hope it's an understandable situation. It doesn't make sense to constantly keep unlocking the door every 3 minutes.)
So, that's that. It's now 11:15 and they're both still asleep. Wish they'd wake up and help with the rest of this crap. I really really want to get going.
PS- HAPPY 3RD ANNIVERSARY MIKE! Love you!
Hoping your move went ok. Just thinking about you and Ayden.
